The Power Steering of Honda F1 is not for the purpose of
making steering lighter.
At present, electric power steering is not installed in F1. However, Honda was the
first one to introduce electric power steering. When Jacques joined B.A.R Honda,
he said, "If Hydraulic power steering is placed and the machine gets heavier then
there is no need to put such power steering." So, Honda introduces EPS and initially
placed it in F1. And when Jacques drove that car with power steering he said, "One
can not drive without power steering which makes driving comfortable."
But, as F1 machine is very light and when it is motionless the steering operation
also becomes very light. In short, power steering is not required as it is required
in other vehicles.
Hydraulic power steering
F1 cars run at very high speeds and at corners one has to turn the steering quickly
and after turning one has to return the steering immediately. To facilitate this,
Honda F1 cars are now fitted with light weight hydraulic power steering.
This steering is easy for driver to turn and also quickly returns to the original
position at high speed corners. This steering is also better visible for repair
and servicing at pits for service engineers
